Bar Next Door at La Lanterna di Vittorio
Biography & Highlights
MacDougal Street is always loud with tourists and shouting students, but you slip past the iron gate at La Lanterna di Vittorio and descend the steep brick stairs into the basement. It's a completely different world down there. Low ceilings, dim candlelight bouncing off peeling plaster, and jazz notes bleeding through the cramped room before you even hit the bottom step.
The crowd is a mix of date-night couples crammed onto tiny velvet chairs and neighborhood regulars who know to grab a corner table early. You don't get much elbow room here because the space is tiny, but that is part of the charm. There is a decent wine list, and the bartenders keep things moving even when the room fills up with people trying to escape the sidewalk noise upstairs.
The stage sits right in the corner, so close you can practically hand the upright bassist your drink. It's warm, it's intimate, and the musicians feed off how close everybody is sitting. When the horns kick in, the whole cellar vibrates. You watch the drummer catch a stray cymbal hit just as the subway rumbles faintly underneath the floorboards.
